In the past three years, the scale of China's medical device industry has continued to grow at a high rate due to the impact of the New Crown Pneumonia epidemic.In 2022, the number of domestic medical device manufacturers exceeded 30,000, and the number of operating companies also exceeded 1.1 million, contributing to the booming development of the entire medical device industry.

In the ongoing fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the global demand for medical device products is strong, and China's medical device import and export has raised the overall scale by a step compared with the pre-epidemic period, and is steadily ranked as the second largest medical device market in the world.

According to statistics, during January-November 2022, China's medical device exports totalled 444.179 billion yuan, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.2%, much higher than the growth rate of China's total import and export trade of all products and GDP during the same period.

During January-November 2022, among the major categories of commodities exported by China's medical devices, medical consumables had the largest export value, totalling 251.369 billion yuan, followed by medical equipment and IVD reagents.

Among the key commodities of each medical device, protective masks have the highest export value and the highest trade surplus, followed by testing test strips and masks, etc. Other commodities such as PVC gloves, rubber gloves, medicinal cotton, gauze, bandages, and medical protective garments are also ranked high.

China's medical device industry is stepping into the golden decade, with the continuous adjustment of industrial policy and the implementation of the ‘One Belt, One Road’ strategy, domestic medical device enterprises are accelerating the globalisation of the layout and participate in the international competition, more Chinese enterprises are ‘going out’.

At present, the development mode of medical device enterprises is changing from marketing-driven to innovation-driven, and the competition dimension will be expanded comprehensively. Whether they can further promote the digital transformation and give full play to the value of data as a strategic resource will play a key role in the future competition of the industry, and the medical device enterprises will also face an unprecedented competition pattern.
